Greece has always been an immensely popular tourist destination amongst Britons, with holidays in Crete proving particularly alluring. Steeped in fascinating history and culture as well as being vastly beautiful, Crete lends itself as the perfect holiday location. The main port of Iraklion is a fantastic place to stay, featuring some of the most important historical artefacts in the country as well as modern shops, hotels and restaurants; Iraklion acts as a perfect representative for the rest of Greece.

Paliokastro beach

What to See

Knossos Palace

One of the most significant archaeological finds on the globe, many people visit Iraklion just to see Knossos. The ruins, which date back almost 4,000 years was supposedly inhabited by King Minos and the minotaur and has been renovated to give visitors an idea of how the ancient aristocracy lived.

Fountain Square

Commonly known as the Lions Square because of the stone lions that surround it, Fountain Square is the major hive of activity in Iraklion. Lined with wonderful cafes, bakeries and ice-cream parlours, it is hugely popular with tourists

The Archaeological Museum

Featuring a mind boggling amount of historical art and artefacrs, the Archaeological Museum is a must see for history buffs. Taking around 2 hours to navigate, you will be astounded by the variety of frescoes, statues, vases and jewellery dating back to the ancients.

Historical Museum of Crete

Featuring a more modern collection than the archaeological museum, here you will find a great range of Byzantine ceramics, weapons and flags from the revolution. There is also an broad range of coins.

The Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis

Said to be the burial place of the author of “Zorba the Greek” the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis provides a stunning panoramic view of the city. It is also steeped in myth, with the mountain’s outline being said to be the face of Zeus.

As well as these fascinating attractions there are also a number of beaches for you to relax upon including the Amoudara which is great for family fun but busy in high season, and Paliokastro which is situated around ten miles outside of Iraklion and wonderfully secluded.

Holidays are a luxury now that many people just couldn’t live without, but with the current economic climate, people are reluctant to spend as much as they would have previously and tend to stay a little bit closer to home. Britain has seen increased tourism over the last few years, and many people are realising that there is no need to go abroad for a wonderful, fun-packed holiday.

Scotland is a particularly popular destination. Just across the border lies another world, filled with diverse landscapes, vast arrays of wildlife and engrossing history. The Scots are renowned for their hospitality and you are always guaranteed a welcoming, friendly experience on your trip.

Motorhome rentals in Scotland has seen a surge in popularity over recent years. Loads of people are realising that to truly experience everything this vibrant country has to offer, they need to cast off the shackles of hotel stays and get out there and explore properly. Hiring a motorhome is a great way to ensure you make the most of your holiday. Because you have everything you need with you, you’re not restricted by time constraints, trains, buses and other transport issues – you are entirely self-sufficient and so won’t even need to book campsites unless you want to.

If you do decide to use campsite facilities then there are hundreds to choose from all over the country, many coming with a variety of leisure facilities like swimming pools, children’s playgrounds, bars, shops and cafes giving you a real sense of community.

If you prefer solitude, then you can simply drive into the country and park up for the night, waking to the extraordinary views that you only get in Scotland. Drive to the coast for some dolphin watching, or take yourself off to Loch Lomond to see Red Stags, Osprey and Eagles. Camping gives you the opportunity to wake up with all this on your doorstep, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Torquay is world well-known as one of the most famous UK holiday getaways. This is because of its history and in more contemporary times made well-known by the superiority of the seashores, setting and the customary of Torquay hotels. Torquay has constantly been a favorable spot to visit in the past because of its warm year round temperature. Going back to 19th Century in Napoleonic periods Torquay was used often by the Channel Fleet which assisted defend England in contradiction of assault by Napoleon. The generals’ families frequently visited Torquay so as to they could be close to their family. Far along in the 19th Century Queen Victoria studied the whole marine in Torbay waters. Furthermore Torquay was also gotten as a health resort, the unpolluted air and warm temperatures fascinated the well-off that originated to Torquay in the winter to recuperate from disease.

The populace in Torquay augmented enormously between the beginning of 1800’s and the 1850’s. Statistics are assessed to show an upsurge from 838 inhabitants in the early 1800’s to a huge upsurge of 11474 in 1851. Around the year of 1850’s there were approximately 2000 hotel rooms in Torquay accessible for booking.

A main reason for this was because of appearance of the railway structure. The people of Torquay created a great choice to construct a railway station in Torquay as this made the town available to anybody who could pay for a ticket. Many of the fetters holding people from getting to Torquay had been raised with the opening of the railway station in Torre in the year 1848. This railway station though was far from the sea and in 1852 the choice was taken to range Torquay’s railway along to the sea. It was originally deliberate to lengthen the railway all the way down to the marina though it was absolute that this could lead to Torquay mislaying its appeal as a seashore town.

Because of the railway being opened it carried about an upsurge in prosperity to Torquay and the area truly in progress to flourish. The ultimatum for Torquay hotels thundered and as an outcome, a lot of new hotels were constructed to service the growth sought-after. The main publicity campaign to carry healthy travelers to Torquay began in 1902. Where Torquay had formerly mainly billeted the well-off or ill the steps were occupied to earn a healthier kind of guest. After world war, the Great Western Rail Company truly assisted Torquay form itself as main tourist choice as it prospered in throwing a very operative publicity campaign endorsing the town. The resort increased in popularity and in the year1938, Torquay noted its most eventful day, the August bank holiday. On this day, around 20,000 visitors reached at Torquay station which was trailed the following day by approximately 50 trains carrying in even more visitors to a lot of Torquay hotels.

Regardless of where your home is, it is always nice to find a way for a weekend or perhaps a long holiday. Nevertheless, sometimes the opportunity shows up quite out of the blue, causing you to be struggling for a place to stay. A lot of hotels, bed and breakfasts and also private cottages must be booked well ahead of time. This is why independentcottages.co.uk is a great site to visit. There are a huge selection of last minute independent holiday cottages which can be found at our website. In fact, we pride ourselves on supporting anyone find what they are in need of in just a moment’s time.

Independent cottages are excellent locations for people who aren’t looking forward to the effort involved in remaining in an enormous, crowded hotel or holiday resort. They feature the luxury of having a secluded area that allows the use of a full kitchen so that it truly becomes a home away from home. Surprisingly it is often much nicer to be in your own spot for a holiday than in a hotel that provides a full staff access to your quarters. Not only do you feel considerably more secure knowing you’ll be able to lock up your place and go off for the afternoon without the idea of maid service going into your room, but you may feel less susceptible to crime such as breaking and entering.

One of the other benefits associated with independent cottages which may be secured at the last minute is always that many are pet friendly cottages so you will not have to go through drama trying to arrange lodging with your animals. Most people who are pet owners know that there are usually a good deal of arrangements that must definitely be made in relation to its the family pets prior to going on vacation. A last minute booking at a private cottage has to be a piece of cake in contrast.

Everybody knows Valentine’s Day is the occasion to show your lover just how special they are – but although it could be an overpriced day, a passionate holiday or other Valentine’s treat needn’t cost the world.

Regardless of whether you communicate your love through a getaway or stick with cards, presents and flowers, it’s important to get across just how much that significant other means to you on a day where everyone’s thoughts turn to displays of love and devotion.

And with an incredible number of us making a special effort for a partner, spouse or even just a good friend, it could be very easy to spend too much – there are plenty of companies on the market who would like you to feel that the greater you would spend on somebody, the stronger your feelings!

The truth is an intimate holiday don’t have to cost the world. Using coupon codes to save cash here and there can really make an impact, allowing you to present your spouse that they hold a special place in your heart without burning a special hole in your wallet.

While we’re talking about romantic breaks, a luxury spa weekend might sound costly but you can help to save even more money by pursuing Valentine’s Day. The cost is significantly reduced and what’s the harm in unveiling the present on the day and going the weekend after?

Similarly, everybody loves a romantic dinner, but why pay for the atmosphere of a extravagant restaurant when you are able spend a small fraction of the cost on an intimate night in? Whether or not in the home or on holiday, finding the time to cook for your loved one shows you care and is far more personal than merely dipping into your wallet for somebody else to do the job.

So regardless of whether you’re looking for a new dress for the special occasion or even thinking about spending money on an engagement ring, there are plenty of online coupon codes available to help you save a small fortune on Valentine’s Day.

That may be a presumptuous statement to make but after reading this article thoroughly, theres a good chance that youd agree to make that statement as well.

But first, lets get down to the basics.

Cebu, as mentioned, is in the Philippines. Now, when you mention the Philippines, its either Manila or Boracay — those are the first places to come to your mind. But we assure you that Cebu is as good as both those places. Better yet, theres no need to pass through other cities in the Philippines just to get to Cebu. As one of the major ports of the country, Cebu is even directly accessible from other countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, China.

Since Cebu is highly urbanized, tourists have no need to worry about where to purchase toiletries and other necessities because there are department stores and 24-hour convenience stores strategically located all over the city.

But enough about that and lets get directly to the good stuff.

The Olango Wildlife Sanctuary should always figure prominently in a tourists travel plan to Cebu, Philippines. In this sanctuary, tourists would able to catch a glimpse of different species of migrating birds coming from places as far as China and Siberia. Based on studies made of this natural phenomenon, these birds choose Olango as a wintering ground and a way to increase their fat reserves before they resume flight.

Cebus Fort San Pedro is the oldest tri-bastion fort in the Philippines. Built in 1565, its 8-foot thick walls and 30-foot tall tower bore witness to several wars, not the least would be World War II, in which it served as barracks for American soldiers.

Casa Gorordo Museum is also one of the well-loved destinations of tourists once they arrive in Cebu. Taking a tour of this well-kept museum is like stepping into another time and era, thanks to the lovely antique furniture on display and the conservation of residential features from the old days such as the magnificent courtyard.

And speaking of Gorordo, make sure that you visit 415 Gorordo Avenue in Lahug, Cebu City because that is the address of the Sala Piano Museum. In this museum, youd be able to a see a collection of about hundreds of pianos of different shapes and sizes.

Lastly, theres the Kawasan Falls in Matutinao, Badian. The sight of this majestic waterfall would no doubt make you think how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful world.

Holidaying at home has never been so popular. With the decrease in family and individual budgets many people are choosing to stay at home and seeing what UK camping holidays have to offer.

Camping today no longer has to mean limited facilities, soggy tents and unhappy campers – UK campsites have been given a make-over. Campsites now offer holiday makers a home-from-home experience offering more shower and bathing facilities, outdoor BBQ and picnic spaces, and onsite cafes and restaurants offering local and home cooked food – perfect for people needing a break from the old routine.

For holiday goers who are too posh to pitch, glamping has now become an option. Glamping (glamorous + camping) takes camping to a higher level. From options to stay in gypsy caravans, tipis, yurts, double decker bed buses and caravan pods campers are now spoilt for choice. Glamping gives holiday makers the option to just turn up, settle with a drink and enjoy the holiday. Tipis and yurts are great options for friends and families and often offer separate sleeping quarters. This gives a fun communal experience but with the added bonus of some privacy. Some yurts even have king-size beds and the added bonus of sky lights so you can snuggle up whilst you enjoy the blanket of stars.

For the more eco conscious amongst us many campsites have gone back to nature and are now sustainable. In the hope to reduce their carbon footprint many offer alternatives to fossil fuels – solar power to heat hot water for showers, wood burning for cooking facilities and compost toilets to reduce water wastage.

Campsites are now ‘designed for accessibility’ and ensure all improvements are made with their disabled customers in mind. Wash rooms have been adapted for wheelchair users and many caravans are now wheelchair accessible. Many campsite owners go out of their way to make sure that their disabled guests have an enjoyable and comfortable stay. It’s therefore worth checking campsite reviews online or contacting the campsite direct and ensuring your pitch is as close to the amenities.

Dubai gets known worldwide not only due to its modern infrastructure, but also because of the marvelous building feats it periodically keeps on taking up. The world’s first ever seven star hotel got erected upon and established only on Dubai’s shores. One of the most exciting Marinas of today’s time is also being developed across the same sea front these days; another feather in a long list of Dubai’s landmarks. There is more to talk about nowadays though, as the world’s tallest building is also getting shaped up at the same location now. The soaring tower, named Burj Dubai, has some amazing stats and facts to speak of. Some of these are being listed and discussed below.

The tower is about to be built in the middle of a man-made lake, which when filled with water will provide the architecture a picturesque setting. The building will carry some influences of the Islamic architecture as well so as to keep Dubai’s heritage alive. For example the triple-lobed footprint of the building is stated to be based on an Arabian flower. At the same time, some onion shaped domes are also being made part of the building’s exteriors. Developers are no doubt aiming to provide this latest of Dubai’s landmarks with a blend of the modern and Islamic outlooks both.

According to the plans, a public observation area and a private club are expected to get located at the building’s top. Initially designed to have three decker elevators, the building will now carry only two decker elevators when completed in 2008. The last of the residential apartments will be constructed at the floor number 109th, while an observation area will be made available to the public on 124th. The whole structure is to be rotated about 20 degrees so as to make it withstand the stress being caused due to the Arabian sea winds. The plinth of tower goes 50 meters below the earth’s surface, with a staggering amount of steel and up to 45,000 cubic meters of concrete dumped in there.

Despite Burj Dubai’s external similarities with that of the Sears Tower, it stands way different in the structural terms. The building’s earlier plans involved getting designs borrowed from Grollo Tower, which was proposed several years back at Melbourne. However, it subsequently got replaced by Skidmore Owings & Merrill with the present structure. Burj Dubai will not only be the tallest building, but also the tallest man-made structure, when fully completed. The total number of floors expected are around 162. There is no word on the building’s final height as of now, but it might stay around the 800 meters mark.

Dubai’s economic clout has been rising rapidly in the recent years, and the projects like Burj Dubai are just a testimony to the same phenomenon. The world’s tallest man-made structure, as they might call it, would only be an addition to the list of so many landmarks already built there. There seems to be no end of Dubai’s dreams now, as its skyline gets crowded with each passing moment.

If you looked on the various news headlines emerging from the Middle East, you will notice a substantial shift taking place in the manner they have been reporting about this region as a whole. From various military coups to the stories of political vendetta; from gun totting hostage takers to the unnerving interpretation of Islam; and from the so-called lack of democratization to the non existent human rights, the Middle East has always had to bear the brunt of hostile news reporting. But, the emerging trade and commerce and tourism activities in Dubai are fundamentally changing this long held stereotyped interpretation of the Muslim world now.

Don’t be surprised therefore, if the British footballer David Beckham and the Spice Girl Victoria are seen walking out of one of its famous five star hotels, or if the reigning formula one champion Michael Schumacher is spotted unwinding somewhere on its breathtaking shorelines. You will also come to notice some very famous names from the corporate world making regular rounds of this famous city. From top cine stars to sports celebrities and from the multi-billion empire holders to the average holiday making freaks, all are increasingly being seen on Dubai’s soil these days. This in itself, speaks a lot of how dramatically the world’s vision of the Middle East has transformed.

The next round of Dubai Tennis Championships to be held in February and March 2007 will be another treat for the tennis lovers and the media managers both. Names like the William sisters – Serena and Venus and Andre Agassi have played on this venue and enthralled the audiences in the recent past. Equally reported have had been the events like a friendly match organized between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer on the helipad of Burj Al Arab hotel. Tennis balls kept falling down inside the Arabian sea as the two players proceeded with some of their favourite strokes. Not too behind was Tiger Woods who made use of the same helipad for his golf practice. Woods was in Dubai to take part in the Dubai Desert Classic and couldn’t resist the temptation of practicing on such a breathtaking height.

If the celebrity spotting has become one of the new trends in Dubai’s social life, then so is the emerging competition among the hotel owners for making the best out of this pulsating market. They are making all efforts, like building of more niche hotels, to cap this upscale clientele. This means exclusively targeting the business travellers and the multimillionaires from across the globe. Apart from Dubai, Lebanon and Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt have also been trying to raise their stakes. However, the former is well ahead in the race involving these three.

Dubai’s desire of opening its borers to the outside world has been well received and reciprocated by the latter. As a result we are witnessing the very fundamental image of the Middle East taking a new turn in the global environment. By allowing so many expatriates on its soil, Dubai has made its friendly intentions clear. Expatriates will continue on playing a crucial role in the local economy, hence making the exchange of the Arabian peninsula with the outside world stronger. It speaks of a pleasing scenario, which will continue to get on more shades with each passing day.
